On Saturday, April 22, 2006 (which happens to be
Earth Day, appropriately enough), we'll
be gathering our forces into a small, dedicated and (hopefully) organized
work-party or two to pick up shovels, picks and other implements of destruction
(apologies to Arlo) to plant some 30+ trees along the banks of the Battenkill
in the stretch behind the Battenkill Inn,
in Sunderland, VT.

|
As discussed at our last chapter meeting (3/14/2006 -- you can find the
minutes online in case
you missed it), Inn owners Alan & Judy Edmunds are propopents of doing whatever
they can to help stabilize the streambanks along their property, rebuild the
riparian zone and improve the trout habitat in the process for short and
long-terms. To this end, they have volunteered to cover the cost of the 30+ trees
(which are to be primarlily sugar and red-maples in the 6-8' tall range), and we
as a chapter agreed to provide the volunteer work-force to get these trees into
the ground.

|
Budget permitting, we're exploring our options for contributing to help further
defray the expenses of this project. One option is to roll-over the proceeds
from the Opening Day Pancake Breakfast directly to this project. Other options
are also being explored.

|
The chapter board members and directors will be there prepared to work. If you
can join us for a few hours of digging and planting, we'll get the the trees in
the ground that much quicker and we'll all be able to trade our shovels for fly
rods and hit the water. You can sign up to volunteer online using the link
below, or you can email or or contact Doug by phone at
# (978)897-3728.
