Program Details for 1/13/2009 Annual Meeting:

Steve Roy from the US Green Mtn National Forest will present the Southwestern VT TU chapter with a program highlighting the many fishing opportunities to be found in the Green Mtn National Forest.

Many of these fishing spots have had Steve's Green Mtn National Forest habitat team do extensive and expensive habitat restoration work to improve the trout per mile in those sections! Steve in his program will have the data WITH PHOTOS that shows how the efforts of the US Green Mtn National Forest staff has increased the trout numbers in those many "GEM SPOT" locations (that most of us do not even know exist)!

These "GEM SPOT" Vermont Green Mtn National Forest locations... well, some of them are a bit out of the way, and some are obvious! For many of us who have fished major rivers and streams in the area for years, this program will be a real eye opener as it will point out how much outstanding fishing places that are easy to get to, that we have missed taking advantage of...! It will be a detailed program as to how to approach looking at the National Forest's watersheds as a destination to fish at (good news for us as all of the Green Mtn National Forest fishery is located in our own backyard).

Steve is a well known, and well regarded, master at the art of Fishery Habitat Biology. He spent many years mastering the craft in the western areas of the United States, came east to Vermont, and has been in Vermont tending to the habitat needs of the Green Mtn National forest since. Steve has also helped out with planning and installation phases of many trout habitat improvement projects that have been done by TU, and other clubs/organizations in Vermont.

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 at 7pm -- Chapter meeting at the West Mountain Inn, in Arlington, VT.
Our March meeting featured special guest Ron Zawoysky, of the Clearwater TU chapter. See below for Ron's program description.

March Speaker Bio

Ron Zawoysky has been fly fishing the Battenkill since the very early 70's. He also enjoys fly tying, fly rod building and photographing his many on stream adventures. Ron has journeyed to Montana, Wyoming and Alaska at least once a year for the last 25 years in pursuit of the many species of trout. He makes his home on the banks of the Battenkill in New York for most of the summer months and enjoys fishing the Battenkill and the surrounding waters in Vermont and New York.

March Program Description

Ron has made three trips to the high mountain lakes of the Wind River Range of Wyoming in search of Golden Trout. These trips have ranged from a week to 11 days and have involved grueling hiking at high altitude which was rewarded with excellent golden trout fishing. Ron's program will highlight his most recent trip and feature both the fishing and hiking experiences as well as the magnificent scenery of the Wind River Range.

Mark your calendars now for Tuesday March 11, 2008 at 7pm. This program sounds like a great one. Be sure to join us and bring a friend!

Annual Meeting - January 22nd 2008. We conducted officer elections and Jim Lepage gave a special presentation on fishing Labrador. If you missed this one, you missed a good one!

Sadly, we had to cancel our special presentation by legendary fly caster Bill Cairns who was scheduled to speak at our September 2007 chapter meeting. We will reschedule Bill to join us for a future meeting date.
Our March chapter meeting was held 3/13/2007 at the West Mountain Inn and featured VT fishing guide Lawton Weber, of Pleasant Valley Fly Fishing Guides, in Underhill, VT. Lawton gave a great presentation on fishing New Zealand and his slides offered proof positive that Lawton knows what it takes to tango with those big, beautiful browns from New Zealand.

Lawton knows a thing or two about Kiwi browns.
Our February chapter meeting was held 2/13/2007 at the West Mountain Inn and we were pleased to host Richard Lagdon, Mark Ferguson, and Ken Cox, co-authors of "The Fishes of Vermont: a field guide to the fish species of Vermont". They gave an interesting presentation on how the fishes that currently inhabit the waters of Vermont actually came to reside here. Following their presentation, they fielded questions and signed copies of their book which were available for sale. If you were unable to attend this meeting but would like to order a copy of the book for yourself, check out the VT Fish & Wildlife Department website.
Our January chapter meeting was held on 1/30/2007 at the AMFF and we were pleased to host Joshua Gorman, Watershed Coordinator, VT DEC/ANR. Josh presented an overview of his role as a watershed coordinator and talked to us about what we can expect and look forward to as we work together on areas of common interest -- water quality and cold-water conservation, protection & restoration. Following Josh's presentation, we conducted some chapter business -- approving revised chapter bylaws and electing a new slate of chapter officers and directors. Complete meeting minutes are available below:
